The Fundamental Case™ is a one-day instructional workshop focused on phonological awareness for students ages 4- 7 or as remedial instruction for older students. This foundational skill is essential for teaching reading through direct instruction and practice.

The Fundamental Case™ includes easy-to-use lesson plans, student activity mats, hands-on manipulatives, and digital access to reproducible materials.

The workshop will equip you with the skills to teach 86 lessons, utilize book recommendations, and follow 8 sequential steps for developing phonological awareness.
Grammar Case
$475 (Tuition $175 + Materials $300) a non-refundable $50 deposit
The Grammar Case™ is a one-day instructional workshop designed for working with children in grades 1-12. This workshop introduces a multimodal approach to teaching the foundational elements of English grammar.

Using a distinctive color-coding system, participants will learn how to reinforce the eight basic parts of speech and teach both basic and expanded sentence and paragraph structures. The workshop promotes techniques that engage students in interactive learning.

Participants will receive simple-to-use lesson plans, a grammar deck, hands-on manipulatives, and digital access to reproducible games and practice activities for student use.
Sound Case

The Sound Case™ is designed for children ages 4-7 or any child still developing foundational reading skills. This literature-themed curriculum is engaging and fun, making it suitable for anyone to teach – parents, grandparents, tutors, and educators.

With easy-to-follow, scripted lesson plans, it offers evidence-based, interactive instruction that’s easy and accessible for all.
This is part of a two-year graduate training program that begins with the two-week introductory course. It will introduce the participant to the theory, instructional practices, and the development of secondary language, as well as the structure, history, curriculum, and terminology of the language program. This course provides a structured, sequential, systematic, multisensory approach to teaching literacy skills to children, enabling them to become successful readers, spellers, and writers. The content integrates phonological awareness, letter recognition, decoding, comprehension, spelling, vocabulary, fluency practice, grammar, and written composition skills. 

Phillips Fundamental Learning Center’s training programs are accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC), and the Structured Literacy Intervention Specialist program meets the criteria for membership in the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA) as well as the International Dyslexia Association’s (IDA) Knowledge and Practice Standards for Teachers of Reading.

Graduates of the two (2) year Structured Literacy Intervention Specialist training courses will receive a certification of completion from Phillips Fundamental Learning Center and will be eligible to sit for the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA) Competency Exam to become Certified Academic Language Therapists (CALT) or Certified Academic Language Practitioners (CALP).

Program Objectives

Participants will:
  • know the nature and characteristics of individuals with a language learning difference or deficit.
  • utilize proven screening techniques to identify, accommodate, and instruct a student who is at risk for a learning difference.
  • develop and present 24 Structured Literacy lessons during a 24-hour practicum experience.
  • learn to address individual learning styles through the use of discovery teaching and cooperative learning instructional techniques.
  • participate in class activities and class assignments designed to develop skills and techniques necessary to meet unique learning needs and address the five necessary components of reading instruction:* Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency, and Comprehension.
  • be familiar with the specific professional terminology.
  • demonstrate course proficiency by completing a post-test.
  • read and complete a book report on What’s Right With Me? By Joan Stambaugh and five other books of choice, as well as complete six article reports on the subject of dyslexia or other learning disabilities.

Participants will:
  • explore the advanced portion of the A.P. curriculum by participating in demonstrations, observations, and lesson planning.
  • read and complete a book report on, Overcoming Dyslexia by Sally Shaywitz.
  • prepare and present three complete one-hour daily lessons, including newly acquired advanced concepts within a cooperative group setting.
  • learn scientific research-based instructional techniques to improve reading fluency, accuracy, and overall reading achievement.
  • explore direct, explicit comprehension teaching strategies, which include monitoring comprehension, graphic and semantic organizers, questioning techniques, summarizing, and recognizing story structure.
  • design and teach a vocabulary and reading comprehension lesson to a small group.
  • demonstrate mastery of and understanding of a synthetic phonics program by coding words using graphic-phonemic relationships, letter-sound associations, letter-sound correspondences, sound-symbol correspondences, and/or sound - spellings.
  • participate in an overall review of the Alphabetic Phonics course and review of the board exam.
  • participate in a review of the History of the Origins of English Words.
  • explore various techniques to improve the grammatical structure within an individual’s written work.
  • gain knowledge of thematic instruction related to writing.
  • become proficient at word-level concepts and skills: strategies for expanding and enhancing vocabulary.
  • acquire sentence-level concepts and skills: strategies for teaching sentences.
  • acquire paragraph-level concepts and skills: personal sequence narrative and micro-discourse strategies as bridges to expository writing.
  • acquire essay-level concepts and skills: expository text strategies.
  • develop two vocabulary writing lessons to present to the class.
  • participate in an Executive Functioning simulation and explore ideas and techniques for students with Executive Functioning ADHD.
  • learn about basic technology and apps available for students who struggle with dyslexia.
  • learn how to use technology for reading and writing.

Graduate Level Credit

Structured Literacy Intervention Specialist Introductory Course - Requirements

Academic
  • Complete two-week training in-person or synchronously through the virtual classroom M-F 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM CST
  • Attend five (5) required workshops or seminar days throughout the school year 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM CST
Clinical Teaching—Demonstration of Teaching Competency
  • Submit five (5) digitally recorded demonstrations of lessons or arrange for a live demonstration
  • Submit self-critiques of the demonstration lessons
  • Demonstrations are observed and evaluated by a Qualified Instructor (QI), Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT), or Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP). The QI, CALT or CALP will provide mentoring, suggestions, critique, and evaluation for the Literacy Intervention Specialist-in-training.
  • Minimum score of 3 is required to pass demonstrations
Supervised Teaching
  • Teach one to three (1-3) groups consisting of 1-5 students per group
  • Minimum of 60-minute sessions, three (3) times a week, 45–minute sessions, four (4) times a week, or 30-minute sessions, five (5) times per week
  • Must reach Alphabetic Phonics Schedule IIB with at least one group to qualify for the Structured Literacy Intervention Specialist Advanced Course
Progress Reports
  • Prepare and submit periodic Progress Reports documenting supervised teaching situations
  • Submit clinical training hours (700 required for therapy-level certification)
